How did you begin your career at Metro Transit?
In 1996, I applied and was accepted to Metro Transit as a bus operator. However, I decided to drive school buses instead to be able to bring my 3-year-old to work with me. In 2006, I returned to Metro Transit as a part time weekend operator at Heywood and went full time within 6 months. Metro Transit paid more and had better benefits.
What were your career goals and what steps did you take to achieve them?
My goal was to become a supervisor. I knew I had more to offer and was determined. I let people know what my goals were. I asked questions about the organization and sought advice from supervisors and coworkers. I showed up to work every day and did the best I could. I took many classes, online and in person. I was willing to go the extra mile and tried my best to contribute positively to wherever I was. I cared about others and tried to demonstrate that care with my actions. My path to leadership led me to many positions around the company, including light rail operator, light rail supervisor, assistant transportation manager, garage manager, and now the acting deputy director of bus operations. As I continue forward, I always remember my experiences in every position I've held to remember where I started.
What advice do you have for others who want to take on more or different responsibilities?
Step out of your comfort zone and be prepared to work through your fears. Get involved and stay engaged. There are groups and committees to get involved in here. When you see a need fill it – people will recognize and remember that. Stay positive and help uplift your coworkers. When you see a problem, create, and share solutions. Take pride in your work. Take time to get to know the great people here – they will encourage and help you. If you don’t make it to where you want to be the first time, keep trying and never give up. Above all else be the best you that you can be in whatever role you are in and keep striving to learn. This will not only help you at Metro Transit, but in life.
