Bicycle racks on buses and trains
There are free bicycle racks on all Metro Transit buses, on METRO Lines trains and on Northstar Line trains so you can pedal part of the way and ride the rest.
Here are some ways to use them
- To increase the number of transit connections and eliminate transfers
- For one-way commuting
> Ride into work on a bus or train if you're dressed for work and don't want to change clothes
> Pedal in for a morning energy burst and take transit home from work if you're tired at the end of the day
> If one direction of your route is mostly uphill, consider using transit for that portion
- For an equipment failure, such as a flat tire
- For recreational outings
> Leave the car and roof/trunk rack behind and take the bus or train one-way
Other things to know
- Only two-wheeled, non-motorized bikes are permitted.
- The maximum weight for a bike is 55 pounds.
- Racks will hold many wheel and frame sizes. Bicycles with wheels from 20 to 29 inches in diameter generally fit; recumbent and fat bikes do not. Please call Customer Relations at 612-373-3333 with any questions about bike racks and your particular bike.
- Call Lost & Found at 612-373-3333 if you have left your bicycle on a bus or train. Metro Transit is not liable for damage to bicycles, except if Metro Transit is found to be negligent or at fault in an accident. Theft, damage, injury while loading and unloading, acts by a third party and all other incidents are solely the responsibility of the bicyclist and not Metro Transit.
- There is no extra charge to use a rack and they're easy to use – simple instructions are printed on the rack.
- Watch the video above, see step-by-step instructions on a bus, on light rail or on Northstar, or practice loading your bicycle on a rack when a bus is between trips or at less-busy times, such as midday, evenings or on weekends. To try a bus rack without worrying about traffic or delaying other transit riders, use a practice rack (locations below).
- If a bike rack is full, ask the driver to bring your bike on board. Note, however, that it is your driver's decision. The driver knows the route and may refuse your request – even if the bus is not full at the time you are boarding – to avoid crowded conditions farther along the route.
